Check out Wallpaper for the Soul by Tahiti 80. Great album! Also, Fosbury, their newest is pretty good...they went the Timberlake route a bit, but still pretty good...
i picked it up at sunrise.. they only had 1 copy though. So far its neck and neck with Cold Ward Kids for album of the year in my books.
I cut/posted this short blurb from djangos.com.
"Tahiti 80
Singer Xavier Boyer and bassist Pedro Resende formed Parisian pop combo Tahiti 80 in 1993 as students at the University of Rouen, bonding on the strength of their shared affinity for the music of the British Invasion era. A handful of demos followed before the duo recruited guitarist Mederic Gontier in 1994, and with the addition of drummer Sylvain Marchand a year later, the lineup was complete. Adopting their name from a souvenir t-shirt given go Boyer's father during a 1980 vacation to the Polynesian islands, Tahiti 80 issued their debut EP 20 Minutes in 1996. The I.S.A.A.C. EP followed, and in mid-2000 Minty Fresh issued the band's first full-length effort, Puzzle. The Heartbeat Remixes was issued that fall with Extra Pieces following in early 2001. The abstract and artistical sound of Wallpaper for the Soul appeared in 2002. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide"
Tahiti 80 are one of my favourite bands as well. Phoenix also. They have several releases since 2000's "Puzzle". All except "Fosbury" are availible in North America Through Minty Fresh records.
The first, in chronological order, was the "Extra Pieces EP", well worth tracking down for the Cornelius remix of "Heartbeat" and the band's exceptional cover of A.R. Kane's "A Love From Outer Space".
The Full Length "Wallpaper For The Soul" followed in 2004. This is an exceptional record. Easily the equal to "Puzzle". It represents a quantum leap forward for the group in terms of songwriting, arrangements, and production.
They followed this up with the "A Piece Of Sunshine EP". Personally, this is my favourite Tahiti 80 release. Every track is a masterpiece. One Caveat, though, there are several versions of this EP in stores. You want the one that contains the bonus DVD, which includes all of thier Videos to that point in 5.1 surround, and the EPK for "Wallpaper For The Soul", which is quite entertaining. The video for "A Love From Outer Space" features animated lego people in space...not to be missed.
Finally, Tahiti 80, who are HUGE stars in Japan, released thier 3rd proper LP, "Fosbury", mid-2005 in Japan ONLY. The record was then released later last year in Europe. It will finally be released over here by Minty Fresh later this year. The domestic release will feature lots of goodies to entice fans who've lived with thier pirate copies (like moi) for a little over a year now. "Fosbury" takes a little getting used to. It sees the band heading off into deciedely electro territory, and the production is a little flat compared to the last two releases. It does have it's charms, though.
The story only gets weirder. Early this year, T80 released a new single and video, "Chinatown", on a CD sampler included with special limited edition T80 levis jeans, sold only in Japan. If you want a copy of this track, I'll have to send it to you, it took me a looooong time to find a good quality file. And you want a copy of this track, it's possibly the best single track the band have ever released.
FYI: They're playing at the Horseshoe on Nov. 17th...first time they've played Toronto since 2000...I've got my tix.
Cheers...
Thanks JP and the other guy for the info on Tahiti...I did not know that they were coming to Toronto either (learn something new everyday)..I`ll check out their new stuff..CN
thanks for the jay-z song...woot woot...i heart jay-z....see yàll in november
Great list! "Fosbury" will finally be released here in the U.S. by the Militia Group label on November 14. It will include "Chinatown," which is a great song, as are most of the songs on the album. I discovered Tahiti 80 through a friend who told me "If you like 'Too Young' by Phoenix ..." She was right.
On a side note, I discovered "Too Young" thanks to "Shallow Hal," which I saw a few months before I saw "Lost in Translation." The song is actually showcased more in "Hal" than it is in "Lost."
